With great sadness, Asahi Baseball Association announces death of Kaminishi
The Asahi Baseball Association has announced with great sadness the death of one of its legends — Kaye Kaminishi of Kamloops.
In a post on Facebook, the association notes he quietly passed on Saturday (Sept. 28) morning in his home with his son, daughter and other family members by his side.
Kaminishi, who was 102 years old, was the last surviving member of the Asahi Baseball Club, which was the toast of Japantown from 1914 until its last game in 1941.
The Asahi never played a game after Canada went to war with Japan on Dec. 7, 1941, and Japanese-Canadians were sent to internment camps.
