Polichronia "Nina" Moutsos

Posted Sep 27, 2024 | 7:50 AM

December 10, 1938 – September 19, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Polichronia (Nina) Moutsos, loving wife, mother, grandmother (Yiayia), sister and friend. She left this earth peacefully at Royal Inland Hospital on September 19, 2024, with family by her side, after a short but courageous battle against cancer.

Nina was kind, courageous, and deeply cared for her family and many friends. Nina was born in Kalabaka, Greece, and immigrated to Canada on May 18, 1960, to join her older sister Tassia in Prince George. Life was difficult in a new country with a foreign language, but she worked hard and soon met her beloved husband John while they worked together at the Simon Fraser Hotel in Prince George. They married on November 30, 1963.

One of Nina’s greatest passions in life was cooking. She loved to cook Greek food including her famous spanakopita and yemista. Nina also loved to watch hockey, and her favourite NHL team was the Vancouver Canucks. Nina along with her husband John worked in the restaurant industry for over 40 years, first owning the Apollon Greek Restaurant in Kamloops, and later coming out of retirement to run the Heartland Restaurant in Blue River. After retirement she loved to spend time in Greece in John’s village of Mesochoria, with family and many friends, and was very happy to visit Greece last year to attend her granddaughter Adrianna’s wedding.

Nina always put others first before herself, and truly enriched the lives of everyone around her. She was incredibly strong, fiercely independent, and a true pillar of the family. Her greatest loss was the sudden passing of her beloved son Vaggeli, when he was just 25 years old, and she was inspired to live life to the fullest, as Vaggeli always said, “Mama, life is too short.”

Nina is survived by her son George and daughter Sophia, her two grandchildren, Adrianna and Alissa, her sister Eleni, and other extended family and many friends both in Canada and in Greece. Nina was preceded in death by her parents John and Evangelia, sister Tassia, son Evanggelos (Vaggeli), and her beloved husband John who passed away just over a year ago.

Nina taught us that love is all we need, and to prioritize health and happiness above all else. She will be deeply missed and will be in our hearts forever. Rest in peace, now reunited with John and Vaggeli by your side. May you find eternal peace and happiness in heaven.

Se agapáme Mama – George and Sophia

Sagapo poli Yiayia – Adrianna and Alissa

Prayers for Nina will be held Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1044 Eighth Ave., Kamloops, B.C. There will be a Funeral Mass at All Saints on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Graveside Service at 12:30 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery, 750 Notre Dame Dr., Kamloops, B.C. There will be a reception following back at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation at www.rihfoundation.ca

You may offer a message of condolence at Schoening Funeral Service for the Moutsos family.
