KAMLOOPS – Wednesday (Sept. 25) was Raise A Reader day in Kamloops.

Starting at 7:00 a.m., student-athletes and community members throughout the city took part in Kamloops’ 17th annual fundraiser.

Tyson Koop and his teammates from the TRU men’s volleyball team were stationed at the Columbia Starbucks drive-thru.

“I think it’s been good. You know, it’s a little bit of an early morning. Some guys turn up with a little bit of bad bedhead, a little bit of early wake-up,” said Koop. “But we’ve been really taking it by storm, stopping the cars, showing the signs and doing our best to raise some money for the kids here.”

Volunteers were posted at 15 Starbucks, Tim Horton’s and McDonald’s locations, drumming up donations for Literacy in Kamloops.

“Our community’s always been so generous during this campaign,” said Jodi Lebourdais, program coordinator for Literacy in Kamloops. “Again this year, they came through, helped donate at all of our locations and it looks like a really successful year to start.”

In just two hours, Lebourdais says nearly $5,000 in cash was collected for the cause. Funds from the Raise-A-Reader campaign support numerous local programs, promoting literacy for all age groups.

“The Raise-A-Reader campaign is really [Literacy in Kamloops’] biggest fundraiser of the year and all of the money that we collect goes back into programming directly in the community,” said Lebourdais. “It supports all the programs that we have here locally in Kamloops — things like the Come Read With Me tutoring program, of course, the Bright Red Book Bus and the Bright Red Bookshelves that you see around the community.”
