KAMLOOPS — An atmospheric river is expected to cause high streamflow in the Kamloops area Wednesday (Sept. 25).

On Tuesday, the BC River Forecast Centre issued a high streamflow advisory for the headwaters of the North Thompson (including small streams around Clearwater, Blue River and surrounding rivers), South Thompson (including small streams in the Adams and Seymour Rivers and surrounding areas), the Upper Fraser River and the Cariboo region.

Based on the direction of flow for the atmospheric river, the forecast centre says there’s a risk of moderate to heavy rainfall over the interior. The North and South Thompson, Upper Fraser and Cariboo could see 40 to 50 millimetres of rainfall.

“No major flooding is expected at this time, but rivers may experience a rapid increase in flows, particularly in smaller watersheds and streams,” the forecast centre states. “In some areas, flows are already higher due to recent precipitation, which may amplify the effects of the upcoming storm. Heavy rainfall may exacerbate runoff from areas that experienced severe wildfires this past summer.”
