Twice-annual Rotary Food Drive set for Saturday in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The fall Rotary Food Drive is set for Saturday (Sept. 21) in Kamloops with volunteers collecting bags of non-perishable food items starting at 9:00 a.m.

The fall food drive is the biggest event for the Kamloops Food Bank every year, helping to bring in approximately 30 tons of food. In previous years, those supplies would keep the shelves stocked at the food bank for several months, but with the rising cost of living, it sadly moves out the door quicker than ever.

“Last year, we experienced an 85 per cent increase over the year prior,” outlined Kamloops Food Bank President and CEO Bernadette Siracky. “These types of food drives used to last us about three months. It’s definitely reduced in the amount of time it lasts, but what remains is this sense of community, of compassion, of giving and that definitely support our efforts year round.”

The food bank is looking for any non-perishable food items, pet food, baby food and truly anything that you may use within your own home.

This year, the organization is also setting up an extra drop-off location for those who miss the early morning pickup window.

“In addition to our location here to drop off food, we have set up a table at the Save On Foods in Sahali, and you can purchase non-perishable items there as well, so they will have pallets set up with different products and we will have bags there. You can purchase whatever you feel like giving,” added Rudi Either. “It’s going to be part of our Rotary Food Drive, which is the first time we are doing this — which is more convenient for people to help out.”
