David Thompson Elementary students have a ‘wheelie’ good time learning bike safety

KAMLOOPS– Thursday morning (Sept. 19), David Thompson Elementary teamed up with RCMP, ICBC and a local bike mechanic to teach its students about bike safety.

“I would say 95 per cent of the students chose to participate today, even though it meant parents arriving as early as 7:30 this morning to drop off bikes and scooters for us,” said David Thompson Elementary principal Dyan Gunnlaugson.

Students in Grades 1 through 7 strapped on their helmets and learned the rules of the road.

“We’re doing a bike rodeo,” Grade 6 student Hudson Perrault told CFJC News. “Teach us about bike safety, helmet safety,”

Gunnlaugson says rider safety is especially important for the Westsyde elementary school, as many of the students ride their bikes to and from school.

“Our bike rack and our scooter rack is often full,” said Gunnlaugson “Safety of students getting to and from school is really important, so we partnered with the RCMP liaison, ICBC and a bike mechanic to help us promote safety and teach the students how to bike around our community safely.”

By recess, students were able to ride away with a basket full of knowledge.

“I learned a lot of safety tips. Like, I didn’t know the hand signals before,” said Perrault.

According to Gunnlaugson, the bike rodeo will be an annual event at David Thompson and next year will even include the kindergarteners.
