KAMLOOPS — Residential permits carried the Kamloops building sector throughout the summer.

New numbers released by the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division show $253.2 million in permit activity for 2024 as of August — more than double the $121.1 million as of August 2023.

The city has already surpassed the 2023 year-end total, which was $224.7 million.

Residential permit activity is listed at around $153.4 million as of August 2024, nearly triple the $58.6 million during the same time last year. That’s despite the city approving 166 permits so far in 2024 compared to 197 in 2023.

Notable permits include one 98-unit multi-family project worth $20 million in July and five multi-family – three or more units – permits worth $13.2 million in August. As of August 2024, 447 residential units have been approved by the City, nearly triple the 163 as of August 2023.

In total, 634 permits have been approved throughout the first eight months of 2024, down from 734 during the same timeframe last year. However, the construction value of $253 million in 2024 is more than double the $121 million during the same timeframe in 2023.

Kamloops set its annual record for building permits in 2022 with $415.4 million.
