PARIS — Greg Stewart of Kamloops has gone back-to-back.

The 7-foot-2 Kamloops Track and Field Club athlete won the gold medal in the men’s F46 shotput event at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris with a season-best throw of 16.38 metres. His best attempt of the day beat out Sachin Sarjerao Khilari of India and Luka Bakovic of Croatia who finished with best throws of 16.32 and 16.27 metres respectively.

Khilari’s second throw of 16.32 metres had him in the lead early but Stewart overtook the top spot with his third throw of 16.34 metres. Stewart marginally cushioned his lead with his fifth throw of 16.38 metres.

Stewart’s winning throw is just shy of his Paralympic Games record and first gold medal winning throw of 16.75 metres in Tokyo in 2021.

Stewart announced his retirement in 2022, but returned to action in time to claim silver earlier this year at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, where he recorded his previous season-best mark of 16.14 metres.

The F46 class is for athletes whose upper limb or limbs are affected by limb deficiency, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement, according to World Para Athletics. Stewart was born without the lower part of his left arm.

Stewart brings home Canada’s third gold medal of the 2024 Paralympic games. As of publication, Canada has 15 medals overall.
