Local lawyer wins King’s Coronation Medal for contributions to Canada and B.C.

KAMLOOPS – This week, outstanding individuals across the province were recognized for their contributions to Canada and their home provinces. Locally, Kamloops resident Bill Sundhu was presented with the King’s Coronation Medal.

The medal recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to their country and their home province. Sundhu has shown expertise in the Canadian justice system and international human rights law to promote justice in B.C. and abroad. Speaking to CFJC on Friday (Aug. 30), the Canadian lawyer and former judge says he feels that his childhood played a significant part in this award.

“I think it started for me in elementary school,” notes Sundhu, “I had a great elementary school principal. I won the elementary citizenship award for a couple of years and I think that instilled in me the value of contributing and doing what you can to make life better for others.”

Although the award is a huge honour, in Sundhu’s eyes the medal also serves as a thank you to others who make an impact in the community as well.

“In many ways, people humbly serve and they don’t get any recognition. They’re the real heroes,” adds Sundhu, “So I kind of accept this in my own humble way for many people who contribute to making each and every community in their own way in Kamloops and right across the province and country.”

This year was the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation with a total of 551 medals presented across B.C.
