Kamloops Fire Rescue seeking on-call firefighters

Aug 29, 2024 | 6:15 PM

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops Fire Rescue is looking to add on-call bodies to their teams in Heffley Creek and Dallas.

According to KFR, the paid on-call program supports the services provided by full-time firefighters to prevent loss of life or property. Duties and responsibilities include responding to fires and emergencies in the designated service area, routine apparatus maintenance and weekly training.

Like many organizations, KFR says its been struggling to staff these volunteer positions since the pandemic.

“I don’t know if it’s related to COVID or whatnot, we haven’t really kind of bounced back since then,” said KFR Asst. Chief Colin Tomm. “But now we face the challenges of getting people to sign up and do the paid on-call positions. I don’t know if people maybe are under the impression that it’s just strictly volunteer or no pay, but it is compensated as well.“

Tomm says KFR is looking to add about ten bodies at Station No. 6 in Dallas, and about half-a-dozen at Station No. 5 in Heffley Creek.

Paid on-call firefighters are expected to attend weekly training and respond to about 25 per cent of the calls from their station.

“It’s actually a great thing for people who are just looking to be part of something in their community that they’re giving back,” said Tomm.

Interested applicants can contact Kamloops Fire Rescue or attend one of two orientation sessions being held at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 4 at Station No. 5 in Rayleigh or Sept. 11 in Dallas.
