Police officer allegedly assaulted during attempted prisoner release

An attempt to release a prisoner ended with a police officer being assaulted and the accused receiving a court date, according to a Kamloops RCMP press release.

The suspect, who had been lodged in cells following a trespassing and obstruction complaint the night before, refused to leave when released from custody at about 4 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 25).

While police were speaking with the man, he allegedly spat in one of their faces and was returned to his cell following a struggle.

He was later released with a court date and conditions related to the assault.
