Stand With Ukraine celebrates country’s independence with rally outside city hall

KAMLOOPS– Flags and supporters wearing Ukrainian colours were in front of Kamloops city hall on Saturday celebrating the country’s history.

“We are standing with Ukraine celebrating Ukraine Independence Day,” said Oleksandr Kondrashov of Stand With Ukraine Kamloops. “[It’s been] 33 years since 1991, when Ukraine became independent. Now they are paying a high price because of the Russian invasion. We want to make sure we show support to the people of Ukraine for celebrating their independence.”

The country of Ukraine is at war after the Russians attacked more than 900 days ago.

“It’s groups like this and it’s gatherings like this that bring us closer to them,” said Gwendyline Campbell Mcarthur of Stand With Ukraine Kamloops. “I will continue to come and stand here every weekend and do what I can to support Ukraine and support all of them while they’re here. Until it’s rebuilt again, I will stand.”

“We are here every Saturday at 3:00, so everybody can come here and find a way to stand with Ukraine,” Kondrashov said. “If they have resources to support there is the scholarship fund we will be creating and we will be celebrating together.”
