Campfire ban rescinded in Cariboo Fire Centre

Aug 23, 2024 | 10:58 AM

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Residents in the Cariboo Fire Centre will be able to roast marshmallows and smoke weenies over a campfire before summer ends.

Effective 12:00 p.m. noon Friday (Aug. 23), the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the Category 1 campfire prohibition will be rescinded throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre, excluding Tsilqot’in (Xeni Gwet’in) declared title area.

The BCWS defines a campfire as an open fire that burns piled material no larger than 0.5 metres high and 0.5 metres wide.

Residents are asked to have a shovel or at least eight litres of water the entirety of the time the campfire is lit and have a fuel break around the fire. They’re also asked to fully extinguish the campfire and ensure the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the site.
