KAMLOOPS — Pride Week is in full swing across Kamloops, with the city partnering with Kamloops Pride on Wednesday (Aug. 21) to host an open house on the Thompson Rivers University campus.

The event was conceived to help bring together Kamloops Pride with a number of community groups in the city, including the Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society, Kamloops Fire Rescue and RCMP Crime Prevention. It’s the mid-point of Kamloops Pride Week, with the events set to wrap up on Sunday with the annual pride parade along Victoria street and a festival in Riverside Park.

“Getting a bit of a different audience, we have a couple of recurring events that we do monthly and we get the same kind of crowd for that, and that’s great. But, it’s really nice to see other organizations in the community and students here at TRU that maybe don’t know the events we have,” said Kamloops Pride Vice-President Remy McInnis.

Of all the events put on throughout Pride Week, this is the one co-hosted by the City of Kamloops. It provides an opportunity for more businesses and supportive services to connect with the Kamloops Pride community and show support.

“It’s so important to be a part of this because we really want to show up for the community,” said City of Kamloops Social Development Coordinator Heather Lee. “It’s a part of Kamloops and we just want to be part of showing the LGBTQ+ community that we are here to support them and give back and be allies to them.”
