KAMLOOPS — Kamloops and area could be in store for a significant amount of rainfall Friday (Aug. 16).

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Fraser Canyon (north including Lillooet), Nicola and South Thompson regions.

“There is a heightened risk of debris flows over areas impacted by recent burn scars. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” the weather agency states.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

As of 11:20 a.m. Friday, Kamloops and Cache Creek are forecast to receive five to 10 millimetres of rainfall in the afternoon and 10 to 15 millimetres in the evening.

Environment Canada adds that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Residents are asked to go indoors if they hear thunder.
