TK’EMLUPS — Tk’emlups te Secwepemc (TteS) received $1 million in federal funding towards a new stormwater collection system.

In a news release issued Tuesday (July 23), the federal government says the system on Chief Louis Centre lands will build community resilience and protect habitats.

The Tk’emlups stormwater collection system involves the construction of a natural detention pond which will help manage runoff during periods of heavy rainfall, thus slowing down the flow of runoff into the South Thompson River. The federal government says reducing peak flow rates will prevent flooding, address existing bank erosion and lessen future erosion.

“Integrated Stormwater management is a meaningful component of a broader holistic approach that TteS is taking on as stewards of the environment,” Rosanne Casimir, Tk’emlups Kúkpi7 says. “Respect for the land, water, air, and all people are foundational to building good relationships where we all benefit and succeed.”
