KAMLOOPS — A fire has destroyed a pair of homes in a modular home neighbourhood east of Kamloops.

A structure fire call came into the Pritchard Fire Department at around 7:30 a.m. Monday (July 22) morning. When crews arrived from the Pritchard and Kamloops fire departments, one structure was already fully involved. No injuries have been reported, with all residents able to escape the blaze.

“Without some kind of fire response, the exposures to the neighbouring properties — it could have been like stepping stones, one to the other. Fortunately, crews got on, got enough water, protected the neighbouring properties and got it knocked down,” said Pritchard Fire Chief Mark Coray. “Everything is just tinder dry right now, so we are fortunate.”

Thankfully, the structure fires did not spread to the dry grass around the scene. Despite the dry conditions, several local residents have taken the initiative to FireSmart their properties and the neighbourhood, likely helping to stop the spread of the fire.

“There are a number of people, my neighbours, who have gone through the effort for sure of getting their FireSmarting done. That certainly makes a difference. My own property alone, between getting junipers out and things that have oil in them like railroad ties and things out of the way. But the first sign was smoke and that was the start of rallying,” said Lee Morris.

Crews were still in mop up stage, tackling hot spots at 10:30 a.m.
