United Way B.C. notes in a press release it is mobilizing to support individuals and communities impacted by destructive wildfires across the province.

Non-profits supporting those affected can apply for the United Way BC’s Emergency Response Grant.

United Way is accepting monetary donations to the United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund to mobilize resources and respond to immediate and emerging needs.

“We recognize the trauma these wildfires have on individual lives, both during the fires and when the smoke clears,” Kim Winchell, provincial director of community impact and investment for United Way B.C., said in the press release.

“Our United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund is there to help fill in the gaps during the immediate crisis but, just as importantly, we are there through the recovery journey.”

United Way BC supports healthy, caring and inclusive communities by strengthening vital connections that support people in need, according to the press release.

Representing the five regions of Central and Northern Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, Southern Interior, Thompson Nicola Cariboo and Northern BC, the organization serves a population of more than 4.5 million people, with a focus on urgent response, kids and youth, seniors, poverty, mental health and food security.

The release notes the recovery fund provided $67,500 to help those impacted by fires in Doig Creek First Nation, Fort Nelson First Nation and the town of Fort Nelson in May.

Money helped with basic necessities including food, clothing, water, diapers and laundry soap; gas cards, transit cards and other transportation to medical appointments, social activities and essential services; shelter and rent subsidy; essential services and counselling; community outreach and education workshops to set up centralized emergency alert systems; and free/outreach stores.
