BARKERVILLE, B.C. — Just hours after being put on alert, the historic community of Barkerville and the District of Wells in the Central Cariboo have been made subject to an evacuation order.

The Cariboo Regional District issued the order for Barkerville at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (July 21). The District of Wells issued its own alert at 2:45 p.m.

Residents affected by the order are advised to use Highway 26 to travel to Quesnel, then register with Emergency Support Services at the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre.

The Antler Creek wildfire was discovered Saturday southeast of Barkerville and Wells. It has quickly spread northward and, as of late afternoon Sunday, was listed at 1,350 hectares by the B.C. Wildfire Service. The service believes it was sparked by lightning.

Highway 26 in the area has also been closed to all non-essential travel.
