KAMLOOPS — As the prolonged hot stretch lingers over the B.C. Interior, the City of Kamloops is moving its cooling centre downtown.

In a news release issued Friday afternoon (July 12), the city says it will open up the concourse of Sandman Centre starting at 12:00 noon on Sunday (July 14) and every day for the duration of the current heat event.

On Friday and Saturday, people in need of a cooldown are asked to go to the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre on the North Shore. Cooling centres are open until 8:00 p.m.

Sandman Centre has played host to the ScotDance Championship Series for most of the week.

In addition to the cooling centres, the city says it is working with local social agencies and through its Community Services Officer Outreach Program to connect with unhoused population.

The city encourages residents to check in with friends and neighbours to ensure they are keeping cool, especially those in vulnerable populations.
