October 18, 1935 — July 1, 2024
Pauline (Gibbs) Pollock, 88, of Camrose, Alberta passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on July 1, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose.
Pauline was born in Liverpool, England to John Gibbs and Dora (Townley) Gibbs on October 18, 1935. After graduating high school, Pauline worked as a library assistant. She emigrated to Canada in 1962, living in Toronto for ten months before settling in Pender Harbour, British Columbia, where she met her husband, Dave. She raised three children and also worked as a library clerk and supervision aide at the elementary school. In her later years, she lived in Sechelt, Kamloops, and finally, Camrose. Pauline was a Scrabble and crossword fiend, a fine knitter, and a book and music lover. She had a gift for making friends wherever she went and was unswerving in her love for her family. She was courageous, not least in dealing with the loss of her vision. Determined to maintain her health as much as possible, Pauline rode her stationary bike and walked relentlessly up and down hallways where she could find her way. A unique method of using peripheral vision and her wicked arm led to many a carpet bowling victory. Always a proud Brit, Pauline finally became a Canadian the year she turned eighty. Given her sense of humour, it’s perhaps no coincidence that she left us on Canada Day.
Pauline’s faith was a cornerstone of her life from a very young age. Her favourite passage was 1 Corinthians 13:13, and she lived faith, hope, and love. Her generosity of spirit and stalwart strength in times of hardship helped lead family and friends. Pauline’s involvement with life groups and bible studies over the course of her life generated many long-lasting friendships. Her kindness and ability to recognize people by their voices was renowned.
Pauline is survived by her children Janet Pollock (Gerry Millar), Alan Pollock (Dawn Pollock), and Craig Pollock (Evelyn Oster); her grandchildren Ian, Laura, Lex, Kyle, Curtis, Cody, and Mitchell (Alisha McLeod); her brother Len Gibbs; many nieces, nephews, and extended family; and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Dora; her husband, David; her grandson, Jesse; and her siblings Dora, John, Beryl, Eric, and Ron.
A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held at Days Inn Norseman, Camrose, on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. According to her wishes, Pauline’s ashes will be interred with those of her beloved grandson, Jesse, at Camrose Valleyview Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Canada or the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Seasons Camrose and the Special Care Unit of St. Mary’s Hospital for their skilled and compassionate care.
