Kamloops surpasses 40 degrees Celsius on July 9; multiple Interior communities set new temperature records

KAMLOOPS — The daily maximum temperature in Kamloops surpassed 40 degrees Celsius Tuesday (July 9).

According to Environment Canada’s weather summary, the 40.6 degrees recorded at Kamloops Airport is a new record for July 9, surpassing the 38.6 degrees set in 2015.

The hottest temperature in B.C. was once again recorded in Lytton. The preliminary daily high of 42.5 degrees on Tuesday surpassed Lytton’s previous record of 40.6 degrees set in 1975.

The Cache Creek area (Ashcroft) wasn’t far behind, recording 42.1 degrees. The previous July 9 record of 40.2 degrees was set in 2015.

Lillooet broke a record that was nearly 100 years old. Environment Canada says the community reached 41.6 degrees on Tuesday, surpassing the 40.6 degrees set in 1926.

Other new preliminary records include the Blue River area at 37.3 degrees (35.5 in 2015), Clinton at 35.2 degrees (34.4 in 1975), Merritt at 38.4 (37.1 in 2015) and Williams Lake at 35.1 degrees (31.7 in 1975).

Clearwater tied it’s record of 38.2 degrees set in 2015.

Environment Canada notes the summary may contain preliminary or unofficial information and does not constitute a complete or final report.

A heat warning remains in effect for regions such as the 100 Mile, Cariboo, North Thompson, Nicola, Shuswap and South Thompson.
