KAMLOOPS — As of Friday (July 12) at noon, campfires will be banned throughout the region. The BC Wildfire Service says the decision was not made lightly, but is needed to prevent human-caused fires, and protect public safety.

In a news release, BCWS says as of 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, Category One campfires will be prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. The ban will stay in effect until October 11, unless stated otherwise.

This means campfires and Category Two and Three open fires are prohibited on public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre. However, the ban does not include the use of outdoor stoves that use charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gas, and have a flame height of less than 15 centimetres.

Anyone who violates the open burning prohibition could be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.
