Kamloops’ first heat spell of the summer to be prolonged: Environment Canada

KAMLOOPS — After a relatively normal month of June, the Kamloops area is expected to heat up and dry to start July.

Environment Canada forecasts that temperatures in Kamloops will peak in the mid 30s by the weekend then remain above the seasonal norm into the middle of next week. As of Tuesday (July 2), the extended forecast also shows sunny conditions from Wednesday to Monday.

Speaking to CFJC Today Tuesday (July 2), Environment Canada meteorologist Ken Dosanhj explains that a ridge of high pressure sitting offshore will bring a lengthy period of temperatures above the seasonal norm.

“Likely not in the mid to high 30s as anticipated Sunday (July 7) and Monday, but we’re still looking at some possible elevated temperatures into Tuesday and Wednesday,” Dosanhj says. “There’s no estimated time if a heat warning is anticipated, but we’re definitely monitoring the situation closely.”

Environment Canada’s criteria for issuing a heat warning in B.C.’s southern interior is when the forecast predicts two consecutive daytime highs of 35 degrees Celsius or higher, with an overnight low of 18 degrees in between.

Dosanhj says while the weather agency is expecting daytime highs between 35 and 37 degrees starting Saturday, the overnight lows are hovering between 15 and 16 degrees. Dosanhj adds that clear skies at night will allow heat to escape the surface.
