BC Wildfire Service advises caution this long weekend
KAMLOOPS — “The BC Wildfire Service is advising caution when having campfires and spending time in the backcountry during this Canada Day long weekend. While campfires are not currently prohibited, remain conscious of your actions and monitor your activity’s potential impact on the environment,” reads a release from the Kamloops Fire Centre.
Currently Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are prohibited in the Kamloops Fire Centre.
We ask that those wanting to partake in these activities adhere to the British Columbia Category 1 Campfire Regulations:
- Your fire can be no larger than 0.5 metre high and 0.5 metre wide
- You must have a fuel break around your campfire. Clear the surrounding area of debris and anything combustible to prevent the fire from becoming out of control
- A rock ring, fire pit, or other non-flammable barrier around the fire can help prevent it from spreading
- You must be equipped with at least eight litres of water or a hand tool, such as a shovel
- Never light a campfire or keep it burning during windy conditions as weather can change quickly and wind may carry embers to other combustible material.
- Never leave a campfire unattended
- Your campfire must be completely extinguished with the ashes cool to the touch before leaving the area
