Jun 28, 2024 | 6:15 PM

KAMLOOPS– Kamloopa Indian Days kicks off Friday (June 28) night down at the Kamloops Race Central grounds.

For the first time, professional Indian relay racing is happening in Kamloops.

Twelve teams from across the country have made their way to the grounds to compete in races starting at 4 p.m. Friday (June 28) and Saturday (June 29).

Organizers of the event say it’s been a long time coming

Jim Cornelsen, owner of Kamloops Race Central says this event has been a long time coming.

“Six years ago when I [presented] to delegates, with chief and council, – part of the PowerPoint presentation,

I had relay pictures,” Cornelsen said.

“And so it’s a really great excitement to see it here [after] six years.”

Immediately following the Indian relay race, bull riding will return to Kamloops for the first time in 14 years. Riders from all over the world will be competing for a $20,000 cash prize.

Cornelsen expects the weekend to be a big hit and hopes the momentum around rodeo sports will continue to grow in the Tournament Capital and Tk’emlups.

“There’s a lot of excitement. The city’s just loving this,” Cornelson told CFJC News.
