POWWOW RETURNS

The Kamloopa Powwow slightly earlier on the calendar this year but still one of North America’s largest

TK’EMLUPS– The Kamloopa Powwow returns for it’s 43rd year this weekend at the Tk’emlups Powwow Arbour and this year may look slightly different.

The annual powwow is one of the largest in the country, it usually takes place later in the summer but this year the event will be kicking off tomorrow night.

“The advantage of this time of year is that it’s not so hot,” said Colin Stonechild, director of Kamloopa Powwow Society. “Typically at the Kamloopa Powwow’s first week in August, it was 40 degrees up to 45 degrees. I’ve come to the powwow many years and it’s been that hot and it’s just a more comfortable environment for everybody.We’re taking into consideration that there’s less fires at this time of year than there is at the end of July.”

Stonechild says attendees can look forward to all the traditional competitions seen at past Kamloopa events, but with a new leadership team in charge, additional events have been added.

“We have great big singing contests this year. We’ve added stick games like traditional hand games that they play here, adjacent to us just on the soccer field here, just below the residential school,” he said.

“We were put in this position in the new year and we just wanting to as a new community, we just wanted to be good hosts and just grow Kamloopa and just make it a good event for everybody.”
