Province to build 500+ new housing units in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — A major provincial housing announcement in Kamloops Monday (June 24).

Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon was in the city to announce the approval of more than 500 new housing units and shelter spaces for the city.

About 200 of those housing units will be built on the so-called Precinct lands in the 500-block of Columbia Street. Those spaces are designated for people with middle incomes. The government is soliciting proposals through BC Builds.

Through the Community Housing Fund, two more projects will be built — one at 604 Lorne Street near the Red Bridge and another at 210 Oak Road on the North Shore.

Two modular buildings totalling 98 supportive housing units will be erected in the 800-block of Mission Flats Road, meant for people experiencing homelessness. The buildings will replace the 54 modular units already in service nearby on Mission Flats.

Kahlon also announced a new 40-bed, 12-months-a-year shelter at 1055 Glenfair Drive, meant for seniors and older adults experiencing homelessness.

The minister notes the province is also working to establish a 22-bed, second-stage transition house for women and children leaving violent settings.

Finally, the province says it is working with the City of Kamloops to set up the Homeless Encampment Action Response Team and Homeless Encampment Action Temporary Housing (HEARTH) programs in the Tournament Capital. About 100 units are in the works.
