COLLINS: Gird your loins — the construction mayhem continues

Jun 23, 2024 | 6:00 AM

EVERY SPRING, summer and fall, construction crews take to the streets to create traffic mayhem. Why do we have to do this in summer, when it screws up traffic, hurts businesses in the area, and gives tourists to the city fits of frustration? The reality, of course, is different than the conjecture.

Firstly, the work has to be done. Some of these projects have been stalled for too long. Some of them are simple, some much too complicated to be done quickly.

Probably the biggest and most expensive job is the Landsdowne sewer reconstruction project. If we want to continue to grow, we have to provide the facilities to ensure developers can build to the standards necessary. But this project covers most of Lansdowne and we are only now in the second phase. As a result, the business community on Lansdowne will have to tough things out for some time yet.

Traffic downtown has been a total mess and won’t likely improve until the work is completely done. Canada Day attendance will be severely impacted, no question.

And we look at all the other projects going on at the same time, it makes getting about like a puzzle of magnificent proportions. Work is going on near the airport on Tranquille Road, in Westsyde, Valleyview, near Pineview, and several other locations.

But as much as we all grumble, we would grumble a whole lot more if one of those old pipes broke, like it did in Calgary, and residents had to conserve drinking water, unable to take a bath or shower, or even flush the toilet. If we keep the grumbling to a minimum we’ll come out okay. In the long run and be better off for it.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
