Kamloops council docks mayor’s pay in response to Code of Conduct breach

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council is hitting Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson in the pocketbook.

In a lengthy motion that arose from council’s closed meeting Tuesday (June 11), council has agreed to reduce Hamer-Jackson’s pay by 10 per cent for the next six months or until he formally apologizes for a Code of Conduct breach last year.

The breach was first reported by Councillor Katie Neustaeter last July. She alleged the mayor made misleading statements to the public. An investigation found the mayor had committed a breach, saying his evidence in the matter was not credible.

In its release issued Wednesday, council says it offered the mayor a chance to formally apologize on February 6, 2024, but he has not done so. Council says the mayor was provided an apology letter to sign and return to council within 30 days.

Speaking to CFJC Today, Hamer-Jackson says he was not surprised by the move, but noted he found out about it through the media. He reiterated he did not run for mayor for the compensation.

However, in its release issued Wednesday, council says the mayor was given advance written notice that sanctions may be coming his way.

It also notes Hamer-Jackson and his lawyer were present at council’s closed meeting on Tuesday.
