KAMLOOPS — The average snowpack across the province remains well below normal although the North and South Thompson basins are receiving a lighter punch.

In its Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin released Monday (June 10), the B.C. River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) says the province is sitting at an average 57 per cent normal snowpack as of June 1. The average is unchanged from May 15.

However, snowpack conditions have moderately improved around Kamloops. The North Thompson is at 72 per cent normal and the South Thompson at 87 per cent, up from 67 and 74 per cent respectively.

The BCRFC notes this year’s seasonal snowmelt has been slower than 2023.

“On average, approximately 46 per cent of the seasonal snowpack melts by June 1. This year, 52 per cent of the peak snowpack has melted,” the BCRFC states. “Last year, temperatures were much warmer in May and 86 per cent of the snowpack melted by this time.”

Elsewhere, the Middle Fraser is at 39 per cent normal while the Lower Fraser is at 54 per cent.
