Thompson Nicola Regional District prepared for summer with EOC ready for action

KAMLOOPS — Last year, the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) opened a new Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at its office in Kamloops. The larger, more open space allows the regional district to have an EOC ready at all times throughout freshet and into wildfire season, allowing the district to react swiftly to any potential threats.

The hope is that the TNRD’s EOC remains quiet this summer, after it was forced into action for more than 60 days last year due to wildfires burning across the region. But nevertheless, the district is ready to activate immediately if needed.

“It takes away all of that stress and concern. Everything is ready to go. All the [information technology] works, all the computers have their updates, all of the phones work, so we take all of that stress away. Generally speaking, most events are very short notice, so being able to respond in a really timely manner is a real bonus,” said TNRD Emergency Program Coordinator Mike Knauff.

In addition to new high- and low-tech upgrades made to the EOC headquarters thanks to provincial grants, the regional district has also launched a new web portal in the hopes of better relying vital information to residents.

“The information now laid out in the way that is easy for residents to find, to view,” said TNRD Manager of Communications Colton Davies. “If it was active, it would be easy to see what’s current. [It’s] a big improvement in terms of how things are displayed and helping communicate that crucial information in one stop, in a reliable place for residents.”

Those throughout the region without stable internet access are advised to utilize Voyent Alert! to ensure they are prepared possible evacuation orders and alerts.

“If they have cell service or even just internet, even a landline, they can have Voyent Alert! and that is extremely helpful for people. And we do have a lot of landline subscribers on Voyent Alert!” said Davies. “When we put the notice out, many will read it on their smartphone, get it in their email and some will get that as an automated voice message.”

The EOC can be operated by five staff members, but then scaled up to met the demand of emergencies throughout the massive regional district. The team is also prepared to work with the basic or even pick up a move if fire threatens the city.

“We often say you need to be able to operate an emergency operations centre by crayon and candlelight. You need to be able to default to the lowest form of technology to be able to do your job. The technology is a bonus,” said Knuaff.

While it’s unclear what the summer will hold, the TNRD is asking residents to plan ahead and be prepared if an evacuation is ordered in your community.

“We are getting into a warmer stretch here. We have been fortunate here so far this spring with more of the usual weather but know what you would do if an evacuation alert or order, or even if a new fire popped up on the hill in view of your property,” said Davies.
