Go By Bike Week sees more than 100 new riders in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Go By Bike Week runs until June 9 across the Tournament Capital. So far this year, more than 2,500 kilometres have been cycled by those taking part in Kamloops, which includes nearly 400 riders competing as a part of 68 teams.

Those willing to trade their cars for bikes, scooters or other active transportation options are also eligible for several prizes by visiting one of the celebration stations located across the city.

So far this week, 117 new riders have taken up the challenge to ditch their cars for active transportation options to get to work and school during Go By Bike Week.

“It’s not just bikes. If you scooter, rollerblade, skateboard — whatever you do to get yourself into work that isn’t in a car. The goal is to shift your mode and get more people out of cars and onto the streets and trails, because any ride counts,” said Coordinator Stacey Gagnon.

For those taking part, it goes far beyond the physical benefits and exercise.

“The more we can get people out and not using their vehicles, I just think it’s better for mental health and physical health, everything all around, our environment,” said Theresa Lee.

While the initiative only lasts one week, it can serve as way to draw more people into active transportation and potentially provide a new option to residents long-term.

“I think Go By Bike Week, the prizes are a huge draw so it gets people interested in biking,” said Gagnon. “And I do believe that once people start to see what it’s like to ride their bike, especially this year with all the construction going on, it’s a faster way for most people to get into downtown. We have a lot more new riders this year participating.”
