KAMLOOPS — On Saturday (May 25), dozens of people took some of their broken household items to the Heritage House at Riverside Park to have them fixed at the Repair Cafe.

Aside from computers and cellphones, people can bring just about anything to be repaired — from woodworking to clothing and electrical items. However, it doesn’t mean it can be all be fixed.

“Typically, we hit around 70 per cent repair success,” said Carl Gagnier, one of the organizers of the Kamloops Repair Cafe. “Sometimes it’s a matter of replacing parts, sometimes it’s repairing the parts here and other times we have to say goodbye to the item. But we tell people how to dispose of the items properly.”

The Repair Cafe happens three to four times during the year – when skilled volunteers and residents get together to repair, reuse and reduce waste.

“If we can avoid things going into the waste stream by reusing and repairing, we do our part in letting the environment have a break,” said Gagnier.

The next Repair Cafe will take place in late October at the Hal Rogers Centre. If you want to be a volunteer, you can email Carl Gagnier at repaircafe@transitionkamloops.net.
