KAMLOOPS — Emergency services and responders in Kamloops held their yearly Emergency Services Day on Saturday (May 11), an event where residents have the opportunity to interact with and learn from various emergency services teams and organizations operating in the community.

Attendees had the chance to gain insights into emergency preparedness, available services and volunteer opportunities.

“There’s a lot of agencies out there working every single day, and not everybody knows who they all are. It’s just a chance for people to come and meet its emergency services,” said Jamie Hardy, the Community and Protective Services Support liaison.

“You can realize who you need to call in different circumstances and who those people are that are going to respond to help you when you really need it,” added Tracey Elias, the Community Services supervisor.

This year, the event had its first annual jail and bail fundraiser, with proceeds going to Special Olympics, Search and Rescue and the B.C. Professional Firefighter’s Burn Fund.

“The judge will set bail for prominent people in our community and our agencies to be arrested and sit in jail for an hour and try and collect those donations. They’re allowed to bring some funds for their bail to the event as well, so that’s kind of fun,” Elias explained.

The day was a success and some attendees already picked their favorite emergency service.

“Police!” said one child. “It’s a cool job and you can arrest people.”

“Firefighter,” said her friend. “We could save people and it’s fun.”
