Kamloops council to discuss housing, hotel developments, motion for mayor’s resignation

May 13, 2024 | 2:53 PM

KAMLOOPS — The regular Kamloops council meeting will have a different start time Tuesday (May 14) — and a full agenda.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the first since council approved a new calendar that has regular meetings starting at 9:30 a.m., with closed meetings following in the afternoon. That reverses the long-held norm for council Tuesdays.

The agenda for the morning meeting includes details on plans for a 90-unit hotel in Aberdeen and a 53-unit townhouse development in Pineview Valley.

Staff will report on how the city is progressing on provincially-set housing targets. Last year, the NDP government listed Kamloops among 10 municipalities it claimed was not approving enough new housing construction.

Council will also officially receive a report from its last Committee of the Whole meeting that includes a request that Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson resign his position. The motion was approved by an 8-1 vote in the committee meeting, but even if council was to adopt a similar motion at the regular meeting, Hamer-Jackson is not obligated to abide by council’s wish.

In the evening’s public hearing, council will consider a large mixed-use development planned for the site of the Tournament Inn in Valleyview.
