Wildfire discovered near south Barriere Lake, while Swakum Mountain wildfire now under control and Lauder Creek blaze burns near Nicola Lake

KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service discovered a wildfire burning in the Lime Creek area near south Barriere Lake on Saturday (May 11) at about 4 p.m.

As of 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, it was .5 hectares in size and classified as out of control.

The wildfire — believed to be human caused — was considered to be burning at a Rank 1 or 2, or a smouldering ground fire, with very little open flame, according to a report in the Terrace Standard.

Meanwhile, the Swakum Mountain wildfire, about 35 kilometres northeast of Merritt, just west of Highway 5, is classified as under control on the BC Wildfire website, with the most recent update coming on Sunday (May 12) morning.

The fire, which is 2.5 hectares, is not projected to grow beyond the current perimeter and its cause is under investigation.

The Lauder Creek wildfire is burning east of the northern tip of Nicola Lake and classified as out of control.

It was seven hectares as of Friday and nine hectares as of the most recent update on the BC Wildfire site at about 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Nicole Bonnett, a fire information officer for the BC Wildfire Service, told CFJC Today on Saturday the fire is considered Rank 1 or 2 — a smouldering ground fire, with minimal activity and minimal open flame.

She said crews worked late into Friday night and planned to continue working through Saturday to fight the fire.

BCWS and Upper Nicola Band crews and a helicopter were been assigned to fight the fire.

The fire is classified as out of control, but that designation in this case does not indicate its behaviour, she said.

“Oftentimes, people hear out of control and they think it’s a really big, raging, Rank 6 fire, but that’s not it at all,” Bonnett said. “It’s just about the fact there is not containment established all the way around the fire perimeter at this point in time.”

Crews are working to establish hose lay around the fire perimeter, said Bonnett.

BCWS says the fire was caused by human activity.
