Property crime down 10 per cent in 2023, but business break-ins jump: Kamloops RCMP

KAMLOOPS — New numbers from the Kamloops RCMP detachment show decreases in most property crime areas last year — with business break-ins a notable exception.

Superintendent Jeff Pelley will present the 2023 year-end report to Kamloops council at Tuesday’s (May 14) regular meeting.

The report shows a total of 3,691 property offences in 2023, a 10 per cent decline from 2022.

There were major decreases in thefts from vehicles (16 per cent) and residential break-ins (39 per cent) from the previous year.

However, the detachment reports 464 business break-and-enter files in 2023, a 14 per cent jump.

In his remarks, Pelley says local Mounties believe two people are responsible for the increase.

“The Crime Reduction Unit targeted both of these individuals and, after lengthy investigations, was able to get charges laid,” said Pelley. “As of the writing of this report, both of these individuals are wanted and one is believed to have fled Kamloops entirely.
