McHappy Day in Kamloops raising funds for the Ronald McDonald Family Room

KAMLOOPS — It’s the happiest day of the year, where calories ‘don’t’ count at your local McDonalds.

McHappy Day is May 8 across North America, when money raised all goes to a good cause in your local community.

In Kamloops and the surrounding communities, the money raised from every menu item Wednesday from coffee to burgers will go to helping the Ronald McDonald Family Room in Kamloops.

“All the money raised today goes toward the Ronald McDonald Family Room, which is just over 1,000 square feet. And it’s a place where families can go to relax, take a load off, have a healthy snack, do a load of laundry, take a nap, stay the night if they need — just to give them (a chance to breathe) when their child is ill in the hospital,” said Brandy Gozda-Sekhon, McDonald’s owner-operator in Kamloops.

Last year, the local restaurants raised nearly $70,000 for charity and, with a massive contribution already secured, this year is expected to demolish that figure.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for the Conconi Family Foundation. They have decided to allow us to match up to $40,000 for donations, which is absolutely incredible,” said Gozda-Sekhon. “Kamloops, Merritt, Kelowna, all of the locations in B.C. — we are having a great day today. But looking at the small communities around us, that is where we are going to raise some serious funds to help them. One-in-four families don’t have child health and medical care in their communities. Kamloops can provide that for them.”
