Kamloops council’s Committee of the Whole formally asks Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson to resign

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council’s Committee of the Whole has voted to ask Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson to resign.

The vote came shortly after the provincially-appointed municipal adviser to Kamloops council delivered his report for the first time in public — putting Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson squarely in the crosshairs.

Former Abbotsford mayor Henry Braun was appointed by the Municipal Affairs ministry at the request of Kamloops council after months of dysfunction involving Hamer-Jackson.

Braun met with Hamer-Jackson and the rest of council several times over the past few months – and delivered his report at a Committee of the Whole meeting this morning.

It makes 10 recommendations for the mayor and another 13 for council as a whole, including the mayor.

Many of them call on the mayor to alter his behaviour in respect to relationships with council and senior staff.

However, Braun adds he is not optimistic that can happen before the end of the current term.

The council vote asking the mayor to resign was 8-1, with only Hamer-Jackson voting against. It does not mean the mayor must resign — only articulating the desire of council.

More to come.
