TK’EMLÚPS TE SECWÉPEMC — The province of B.C. has announced it is chipping in $1 million towards an ongoing redevelopment project by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS).

The money comes as part of a $4-million government commitment for communities in the Southern Interior to promote economic diversity and infrastructure development. The allocation for the Southern Interior is included in the second intake of the province’s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP).

The development project earmarked for the funding already has Sweláps Market, a band-owned and operated grocery store, in place, with a gas station, restaurant, pharmacy and other retail spaces planned in the future.

In a release, the province says through the first round of REDIP funding, TteS previously received $100,000 to “increase internal capacity of their economic development corporation and enhance the ability to act on economic opportunities.”

Tk’emlúps Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir was quoted in the BC government release, stating that the band is grateful for the additional funding.

“Our goal is to responsibly develop our lands in a forward-thinking and sustainable way, while establishing a financial legacy and supporting our community’s journey toward economic self-determination. This funding will allow us to further develop Chief Louis Crossing, creating a space that can welcome businesses and entrepreneurs from the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and surrounding communities.”

The plan is to have as much as $99 million invested in more than 300 projects throughout rural B.C. communities in the first two years of REDIP. The third intake, which will distribute up to $33 million, will open to applications in July 2024.
