Child dies after UTV goes through ice at Cariboo lake
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A child died after going through the ice at a lake in the Cariboo over the weekend.
Williams Lake RCMP say officers were called to Tyee Lake at 5:19 p.m. Saturday (March 23) where a UTV travelling on the lake reportedly went through the ice. Police say a young child died following the incident.
“As spring arrives and we see more and more warmer days, we would like to remind everyone to be aware of the rapidly changing conditions of ice on our area lakes and ponds,” Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says. “We were sadly reminded of how fast a fun activity can quickly turn into a tragedy. While the ice may look safe, as the mercury rises, the ice melts making it unsafe to be on.”
The BC Coroners Service is investigating the death. Williams Lake RCMP say no further details are available.
