KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops-Thompson School District has narrowed down name submissions for the new elementary school in Pineview Valley to five finalists.

The new school has been approved by the provincial government and is expected to open in the fall of 2026.

During the first two months of 2024, SD73 solicited name suggestions from the public, receiving 131 suggestions.

Those were combined with contributions from the Pineview Valley School Naming Committee, which heard from Indigenous rights holders about the land’s connection to the Secwepemc Nation.

The finalists are:

  • Copperhead Elementary
  • Pineview Valley Elementary
  • S7etqwllp Elementary — Ponderosa Pine Elementary
  • Sníne Elementary — Owls Elementary
  • Spelqweqs Elementary — Turtles Elementary

Pronunciations of the Secwepemctsin names and background on the name selections can be found here.

Members of the public are now being invited to give their feedback on the five selections. That feedback will be accepted until April 2, after which the committee will make its decision.

The feedback form can be found here. Alternatively, feedback can be emailed to facilityinput@sd73.bc.ca, or mailed or dropped in person to the SD73 Board Office at 1383 9th Avenue in Kamloops.
