UPDATE (11:00 a.m.): A second, concurrent notable prescribed burn will be held in the Merritt area.

In a news release issued Monday (March 11), the BC Wildfire Service says it and the Coldwater Indian Band and Coldwater Fire Department will carry out a 110-hectare prescribed burn nearly 7.5 kilometres southwest of Merritt – Coldwater IR #1.

The burn is scheduled to late until mid-April or until grass becomes too green to burn.

The wildfire service says smoke may be visible from the City of Merritt and travelers along the Coquihalla Highway. Local weather and venting conditions will determine how much of the prescribed burn will be complete this spring.

EARLIER: MERRITT, B.C. — Residents in Nicola Lake and Quilchena and drivers along Highway 5A may notice additional smoke over the next month.

Starting as early as Monday (March 11) and lasting until around mid-April, or until the grass is too green to burn, the BC Wildfire Service says it and the Upper Nicola Band and Upper Nicola Fire Department will carry out a prescribed burn nearly 23 kilometres northeast of Merritt, adjacent to Quilchena.

The wildfire service says the prescribed burn of up to 79 hectares will reduce buildup of dead grass, help growth of traditional food and work towards community protection objectives in a Wildland Urban Interface.

The start and end dates of the prescribed burn are dependent on local weather and venting conditions.
