KAMLOOPS — An intoxicated man with a knife was taken into custody after a tense confrontation with Kamloops RCMP members last week.

In a news release, detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says Mounties responded to a report in the 700-block of Sydney Avenue on the North Shore at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 22).

Evelyn says the man was uncooperative when told he was being arrested for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

“Due to the presence of a weapon on an uncooperative suspect and the risk it presented to the public and officers, police utilized less lethal intervention options to safely take the man into custody,” said Evelyn.

Officers hit the man with a sponge-tipped round but he did not change his tune. Evelyn says they took him into custody with the help of a taser.

“The suspect was then safely taken into custody and transported to the hospital with minor injuries, for assessment and care,” she said. “A knife was seized by police as part of the investigation.”

Evelyn says Kamloops Transit buses had to be diverted while the response was underway.

Any further witnesses are asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2024-5447.
