KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are set up with a presence near the Mission Flats landfill after skeletal remains were found there Sunday (Feb. 25).

In a news release, detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says frontline members were called to the landfill area at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday after the bones were discovered.

“The skeletal remains are likely to be human, but police are still investigating right now,” Evelyn told CFJC News.

“That’s why this morning there was a police presence in the area as well as yesterday afternoon.”

The RCMP Forensic Identification Section and B.C. Coroners Service are on scene there Monday.

“At this time, the investigation into the found skeletal remains is in its very early stages,” said Evelyn. “Who the remains belong to and the circumstances surrounding their discovery are part of the ongoing investigation occurring in consultation with the BC Coroners Service.”

Evelyn says the RCMP is now turning to the public for any information on the bones.

“If anybody came across something before and they weren’t sure what it was, thought maybe it was nothing and kind of dismissed it– please don’t be afraid to reach out to us,” she said.

“The next steps, again, are going to be confirming, you know, the identity of who the remains belong to and then determining or helping to try to find out what transpired leading up to their discovery there as well.”

Anyone with further information on the discovery is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2024-5687.
