RCMP investigating after man reportedly hurls rocks at business in Merritt

MERRITT, B.C. — Merritt RCMP say it’s looking for information in relation to a man who was hurling rocks and insults at a local business and its patrons.

In a news release, RCMP say it received reports of a young man hurling rocks at a business located on the 2300-block of Nicola Avenue on the morning of Jan. 4.

The suspect was also hurling insults at anyone who came into contact with him.

Merritt officers responded and spoke with witnesses, which allowed them to quickly identify the man, who was well known to police.

The man was located a short time later and tried to resist arrest by climbing in the window of his residence once he saw police approaching. He was arrested after a brief struggle with officers.

The man was held in custody until he was sober. He was released on an undertaking with an upcoming court date, along with a number of release conditions.

Merritt RCMP will be recommending a number of charges to the B.C. Prosecution Service in relation to the man’s actions.

The business in question was damaged from the incident, however, was able to remain open.
