Kamloops council rejects $2.75-million Lansdowne Street multi-use pathway

KAMLOOPS — After a thorough discussion, Kamloops council voted down a motion to build a $2.75-million multi-use pathway on the north portion of Lansdowne Street between Second and Sixth Avenues.

At Tuesday’s (Dec. 5) meeting, council raised concerns related to safety along the corridor, which is frequently used by trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles. Another big concern was the narrowing of the vehicle travel lanes adjacent to the pathway to a width of 3.5 metres.

Pedestrians using the pathway and commuters getting in and out of public transport along the pathway were also safety concerns.

Leading up to the meeting, an online survey was published on the Let’s Talk Kamloops webpage, with a total of 916 respondents.

Another 40 residents attended an open house held on November 16, 2023.

Data collected from the survey showed that out of 916, 58 per cent of residents “somewhat” or “strongly” supported the project, with another 62 per cent of respondents indicating they use multiple modes of transportation.

Common concerns pointed out in the survey included an increase in congestion, project costs, narrower travel lanes and parking removal.

It is unclear whether the project will be revisited in the future.
