LANGLEY — It was a historic weekend for the South Kamloops Titans, defeating the Abbotsford Christian Knights in the final of the BC School Sports 2023 ‘AA’ Boys Volleyball Championship on Saturday (Dec. 2) at the Langley Events Centre.

South Kamloops completed a fierce comeback after losing the first two sets to Abbotsford Christian, earning them their first provincial volleyball banner with a final score of 3-2.

The Titans would lag behind early on in the match, losing the first two sets to the Knights in a close contest by 26-28 and 21-25.

The Titans coaching staff would help retain composure, with the team stepping back on the court and delivering a dominant comeback, winning the remaining three sets by 25-20, 25-18 and 15-10.

Titans assistant coach Matt Lofgren praised his players and their mentality.

“We haven’t had our backs up against the wall very often like that, so it was a bit of a new opportunity, a new challenge for us,” said Lofgren. “I just told them to stick together, it’s the last match of their high school careers and (to) leave it all out there.”

Brandon Johnson would win the Outstanding Libero of the Competition award for the Titans, with teammate Alex Howard earning the Most Outstanding Player Award.

Titans Noah Henson, Huxley Wendland and Gavin MacGregor were also named tournament all-stars.

In honour of the recent tragedy involving three members of the Thompson Rivers University volleyball team, the Titans warmed up for the game wearing customized shirts with their respective numbers.
