KAMLOOPS — Operation Red Nose was in full swing this weekend. This was the first weekend volunteers were on the road this year and dozens of people used the service to get home safely.

“We were really happy to be back on the road. We had a handful of rides on Friday night (Nov. 24) and then we were also on the road Saturday night providing rides home for a lot of Christmas parties. We were really, really happy with all our volunteers and the rides we were able to provide,” said Elsa Poppleton, Red Nose co-ordinator.

And Poppleton said the number of calls is expected to only get higher from this weekend on.

“This weekend, if anybody out there wants to volunteer, we will welcome you with open arms. This weekend is going to be really busy and then the next few to come. We’re gearing up and we’re ready to conquer.” she said.

With that in mind, Red Nose is hoping to get more volunteers and the effort has found a way to encourage people to sign up.

“The more volunteers we have, the more rides we can provide. We have some pretty amazing prizes that have been donated to our campaign this year for the volunteers to win,” Poppleton said. “We’ve kind of got a lot of things to encourage some volunteers to come work with us. And, of course, New Year’s is going to be a busy one, so we’re definitely still recruiting for that night especially.”

Volunteers can sign up at the Kamloops Operation Red Nose website and fill out an application. Those who need a ride home can simply call 250-372-5110 for a safe ride home during the holiday season.
